Mark V. Wiley, O.M.D., Ph.D.(A.M.) is an internationally renowned author, editor, mind-body health practitioner and martial art teacher who has traveled extensively throughout the United States, Europe, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Japan to conduct field research on martial arts and indigenous healing traditions. He has been employed as full-time martial art teacher, writer, editor, publisher, seminar instructor, is an Oriental medicine doctor and has written more than 10 books and100 articles.

Educational Background

Dr. Wiley received a Ph.D. (Alternative Medicine) from the Indian Institute of Alternative Medicine, in association with the Open International University for Complementary Medicine and the World Health Organizations; and a Doctorate in Oriental Medicine from the Philippine-Chinese Association of Tui-Na, Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Sociology (minor in Medical Anthropology) from Drexel University, wherein he conducted research into home-based health care systems in Scandinavia, and wrote papers on enthno-medicine in Africa, Melanesia and China, and on various forms of magic, ritual, spirituality, and rites of passage in Southeast Asia and New Guinea. He also holds an Associate’s Degree in Small Business Management from Camden County College.

Dr. Wiley is currently practicing Oriental medicine full-time at Optimal Acu-Therapy in Philadelphia, PA. He also teaches seminars locally and abroad on Qigong, Tui-Na, Eskrima and Kung-Fu.

He has served as executive editor for the Charles E. Healing Arts Background

Dr. Wiley’s involvement in alternative medicine and traditional healing practices spans more than a 15 years. He holds a Doctorate in Oriental Medicine, which includes practices in Acupuncture, Moxibustion, Guan Fa Cupping, Gua Sha Scraping, Chinese Herbal and Diet Therapy, QiGong and Tui-Na. He also holds a PhD in Alternative Medicince, and is a practitioner of Optimal Acupuncture, Muscle Energy Techniques, Thai
Yoga Massage and Hilot.

He is a long-time practitioner of Burmese Vipassina (insight/mindfulness) meditation, and the following six Chinese internal energy systems: Zhan Zhuang (Standing Pole), Ba Duan Jin (Eight Brocade), Yi Jin Ging (Muscle-Tendon Change Classic), Liu Zi Jue (Healing Sounds), Hsin-I Neigong (Mind-Form Internal Methods), and Qing Loongs San Dian Xue Mi Gong Fa (Hou family Black Dragon and three Special Points Qigong),
and Ti Pa Sho (Iron Body and Iron Palm skills).

Martial Arts Background

Dr. Wiley’s involvement in the martial arts spans more than 25 years. During that time his thirst and quest for knowledge has led him to study many systems.Included among the systems he studied for a brief period of less than five years, are: Chuka Shaolin (Phoenix-Eye Fist), Silat Seni Gayong, Silat Seni Harimau, Pencak Silat, Lathi, Silambam, Doblete Rapillon Arnis, Pekiti Tirsia Arnis, Lightning Scientific Arnis, Sinawali, Jeet Kune Do Concepts, Muay Thai, Boxing, Wrestling and Fencing. Included among the systems he has earned a black belt or equivalent teaching credential, are: Tae Kwon Do, Shiho Karao-ryu Ju-Jutsu, Boxe Francaise Savate, American Kenpo Karate, Modern Arnis, Cinco Tero Arnis and San Shan Gong. While he found this training supplemental to his development, he pursued for a more substantial period and with greater intention several arts, leading him to receive senior teaching credentials, including: Cabales Serrada Eskrima, Binas Dynamic Arnis, Kalis Ilustrisimo, Ngo Cho Kun (Five Ancestor Fist) and Wing Chun Kuen.

Among the more than 60 teachers Dr. Wiley has had the privilege of personally studying under, he has been formally accepted a personal disciple of the following masters and arts: Angel Cabales (Cabales Serrada Eskrima), Herminio Binas (Binas Dynamic Arnis), Antonio Ilustrisimo (Kalis Ilustrisimo), Alexander Lim Co (Ngo Cho Kun), Robert Chu Sau Lei (Wing Chun Kuen) and Hou FaXiang (QiGong).

Dr. Wiley was the first person to conduct martial art anthropological field research among the indigenous MatigSalog tribe of Mindanao, Philippines. At The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archeology and Anthropology he examined, classified and identified a portion of the museum’s collection of nearly 1,000 martial artifacts from the Philippines. He has been nominated to four martial art Halls of Fame, but declined induction, feeling such things are too monetarily or politically motivated. He has appeared on the cover of four international magazines and has given several radio and magazine interviews in the United States, England and the Philippines regarding his research, writing and “Integrated Modular Training Methodology.”
